Can we talk about how prompt lists killed my daily writing habit instead of helping it?
Everyone in this community loves a good list of 30 prompts for the month, but I swear those lists made me worse. Back in January I grabbed a '365 prompts for every day of the year' ebook for $9 and told myself I would finally write daily. For six weeks I cranked out one prompt a day, and by week seven I noticed something gross: I was writing the same 200 word scene over and over with a different noun swapped in. The prompts were doing the thinking for me, so my brain just stopped showing up. I went back to my old system of keeping a single note on my phone with weird stuff I overheard at the laundromat on 9th Street, and in two weeks I got four story starts that actually feel like mine. A prompt is a training wheel, and I think most of us here are past the stage where we need them. What did you get out of a prompt list that you could not have gotten from just watching people in line at the DMV?
