Watched my mentor do a perm wrap in 1994 and then saw one last month, and I barely recognized the process
I started in this trade in the mid 90s, and back then a perm wrap took almost 2 hours with those tiny end papers and rods stacked so tight you could hardly see scalp. Last month I watched a newer stylist do a modern perm on the same type of hair in about 45 minutes using bigger rods and a different winding pattern, and the result honestly looked softer and more natural. The chemicals changed too, the old school solutions smelled like a chemistry lab and we wore gloves up to our elbows, now most of what I see is gentler and the processing time is way shorter. Part of it is the look people want now, looser waves instead of that tight poodle curl that was everywhere in the 80s and 90s. I still keep a few of my old rods in a drawer though, some clients with fine hair just do better with the tighter wrap even today. Has anyone else noticed the perm clients coming back, or is it just my little corner of the shop?
A buddy of mine runs a chair in Austin and he said the same thing, perms are creeping back in but way looser than our old spiral wraps. His fine haired clients still beg for those tiny rods though, so you're not alone with that drawer.
