Brad Mondo said exactly this happens with darker hair colors.

Read somewhere that it's because darker hair has more melanin or something and the bleach has to work harder to break through it. A friend of mine dyed her hair black to dark purple and it turned this weird orangey-brown at first before it settled. Sounds like you gotta be really careful with the timing or your hair gets all jacked up like that.
