That zigzag thinning shear trick from the Charlotte hair expo is a game changer

I went to that big hair show in Charlotte last weekend and watched this older stylist work on a mannequin head. She was using thinning shears but not the way I learned, she was cutting in a zigzag motion instead of straight snips. It made the ends look super textured but still blended, like the hair just fell into place. I tried it on a client yesterday with thick curly hair and the difference was wild, it took half the bulk out without any harsh lines. She even asked if I did something different because it felt lighter but looked full. Has anyone else picked up a weird trick like that at a convention or class that just clicked right away?
