My kid tried to buff scratches out of his toy cars once.

Yeah the buffing scratches thing is so real. I actually had some luck with Meguiar's PlastX polish on a scratched game console case. You gotta use a super soft microfiber cloth and work in small circles, takes patience but it really did make those surface marks fade.

Saw an article where someone used toothpaste to polish plastic. Kids will try anything.
