The guy at the counter at Emilio's Market in Queens gave me a free sample and a spot I still hit 6 months later
I was grabbing a $7 sandwich at Emilio's on 108th St back in March and the guy behind the counter handed me a warm pastry square and said to try it while I waited. It was so good I asked what it was and he just pointed across the street to a tiny bakery that sells them for $2.50 each. "Nobody comes here for that," he told me, "so I send them over." The bakery has no sign, just a glass door next to a laundromat, and the woman there sells maybe 200 of these a day. Six months later it's my Saturday morning spot and the counter guy always gives me a nod when I walk by. Anyone got a favorite spot that was passed to you by a stranger who didn't have to?
