The Butter Battle Book fan page from 1999 went from 8 guestbook entries to 214 in 3 weeks, and I think I know why
So there's this old Angelfire page for a Dr. Seuss book that a woman named Carol in Michigan built back in 1999. For 20+ years it had 8 guestbook entries, all from 2000-2002. I stumbled on it 6 weeks ago while falling down a rabbit hole about old fan sites. The page had a hit counter that was frozen at like 4,000. I checked it again last night. The counter now reads 31,000 and the guestbook has 214 entries, with 60 of them from just this month. What changed? Some BookTok person with 400k followers made a 30 second video about it 3 weeks ago, and now there's a full on comment war in the guestbook between people who think it's sweet and people who think it's weird. I emailed Carol through the old aol address on the contact page. She wrote back in 2 hours. She's 71 now and didn't know any of this was happening until her granddaughter told her. She says she's been reading every single guestbook entry and crying. Has anyone else watched a forgotten page they loved suddenly get discovered? I feel weirdly protective of it now.
