Just learned the hard way that a guy on a GeoCities guestbook was spot on about my "dead" links
Two years ago I posted a link to an old Angelfire fan page on a GeoCities guestbook, and a guy named Dave replied "that one only loads over http, not https, and the server hates capital letters in the path." I ignored him and kept sharing the https version, then last week I clicked my own bookmark and got 403 for the 40th time. I typed the exact url Dave wrote out in his comment, lowercase and plain http, and the page loaded on the first try. So now I'm going through my whole bookmark folder of 212 old sites rewriting paths, and I owe a guy from 1999 an apology. Has anyone else gotten a fix from a random guestbook comment years later?
The "only loads over http" part is worth checking, but I wouldn't rewrite all 212 paths to lowercase just because of Dave. In my experience the capital letter thing is often the server's fault on one specific folder, and lowercase versions of other paths can break just as easy. Your mileage may vary, so maybe test a few before you do the whole folder.
