That Tuesday I cloned 14 drives and lost 2 client folders to a bad SATA cable
Last Tuesday started great, I knocked out 14 drive clones in about 6 hours at the shop in Tucson and felt like a machine. Then around 4pm I noticed two client folders from the Jones account would not open, just kept saying the file was corrupted. I swapped every cable except one cheap SATA cable I grabbed from a bin 3 months ago, and that was the culprit. Turned out that cable was dropping data on writes, so every clone I made after lunch had silent errors baked in. I had to call both clients and tell them their backups needed a redo, which is a call no tech wants to make. Now I test every cable with a known good drive before trusting it, no exceptions. Has anyone else had a cable fail this quietly, and what do you use to check yours?

Sounds like a bad cable from a mystery bin is almost a rite of passage. I once grabbed a random USB hub off a free table at a maker meetup and it worked fine for weeks, then one day it started writing photos as half gray images. Lost a whole shoot from a trip to Sedona before I figured it out. The thing still passed a basic file copy test, which is the sneaky part. Now I just toss anything I can't trace back to a brand I trust, even if it seems to work. Cheap cables lie to you.
