A cracked laptop hinge turned into a 3 week fight with a client in Akron
A client brought in a Dell Inspiron 15 last week with a cracked hinge and I quoted her $120 to swap the whole palmrest assembly. She said that price was robbery and took it to a guy on Market Street who just glued the hinge back together for $40. It came back to my bench 6 days later with a shattered screen because the glued hinge torqued the whole lid. How do you all handle clients who shop the job after you give them a real fix and a real number?
Read a thread on a repair forum about this exact thing and the advice was to put the whole story in writing on the ticket before you touch anything. Like note that the hinge mounts are cracked into the palmrest plastic and glue will not hold load, have them sign it, then if they go cheap anyway the screen replacement is on them. I get why people balk at $120 but the glued fix always comes back worse and now they're paying for a screen too. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather lose the job than eat that follow up fight.
