My neighbor Ray showed me his 1987 list of plumbers and it beat my 3 apps
Ray lives two doors down and has been in the same house since 1989. Last weekend I was complaining about how hard it is to get a good plumber around here, and he just laughed and pulled a folded index card out of his kitchen drawer. It had six names on it, handwritten in blue pen, with little notes like "reliable but slow" and "good on old pipes, don't call before 9." He said he adds one name every few years when someone does right by him. My own system is three apps, two Facebook groups, and a spreadsheet I stopped updating in March. The thing that got me is his list isn't a list of businesses, it's a record of people who showed up. I've probably had 4 or 5 solid people work on my place in the last 10 years and I couldn't name two of them without digging through my email. Now I'm wondering if the simple index card beats everything I've built. How do you all keep track of people you want to recommend to neighbors?
