Pro tip: I called variant covers a cash grab for 6 years, and a $4 book from a shop in Buffalo changed my mind
I used to roll my eyes at variant covers. Figured they were just a way to sell the same comic 9 times to the same person, and I'd say so at my shop every Wednesday. Then about 3 months ago I found a copy of a book I already loved with a cover by an artist I'd followed since high school, and I paid $4 over cover price without thinking twice. What got me was flipping through my long boxes after and seeing that the few variants I'd grabbed over the years were the ones I actually pulled out to look at, not the standard covers. My buddy Dave runs the counter at that shop and he said something simple: "People buy art, not just stories." That stuck with me. I still think the 1:100 ratio stuff is a racket, to be clear, but a nice alternate cover for a few bucks? I get it now. Curious if other folks here have a line they draw on variants, like price or ratio, or if you just grab what looks good.
