Found a box of 1970s indie comics at a garage sale in Bakersfield for $12 and the owner had no clue what was inside
I stopped at a random driveway sale on Chester Ave in Bakersfield a couple Saturdays back and this older guy had a folding table with old paperbacks and a single short box of comics tucked underneath. He wanted $12 for the whole box and I almost walked because the top issues were beat up Westerns I did not care about. But about halfway down I pulled a stack of early Star Reach and some weird black and white indies from the mid 70s that I had only seen pictures of online. What caught me was a hand written index card taped inside the lid with issue numbers and little notes like 'got from Mike at the con, 1978' in blue ink. I asked the guy about it and he said his brother used to sell at small shows around the valley and passed away a few years ago. I paid the $12 and sat in my car for 20 minutes just reading that index card. The notes alone are cooler to me than half the books. Does anyone else keep the old owner notes when they find them, or do you toss that stuff to keep the box clean?
My own boxes are so clean that old notes never last. I'm the guy who peels off vintage price stickers and leaves a little glue scar because it bugs me. A handwritten index card from 1978 though? That would go in a sleeve, not the trash. The story is half the fun with garage sale comics, the books are just paper. Those little notes are like the dude's voice still sitting in the box.
