TIL my kitchen scale was off by 4 grams and it wrecked a whole week of my pour overs
Last Tuesday I brewed four cups that all tasted thin and sour, and I could not figure out why. Same beans, same grinder setting, same 1:16 ratio I have used for two years. Then on Friday I weighed a nickel on my scale and it read 4.1 grams when it should be 5.0. That little drift meant I was actually dosing about 17 grams when I thought I was getting 18, and my water was landing heavy on top of that. Five days of bad coffee from one battery dying slowly on me, which is the worst kind of problem since nothing looks broken. Now I zero the scale with a nickel before every brew, takes ten seconds. Has anyone else had a scale drift on them like that, and did you catch it fast or waste a bag of beans first?
Did the nickel trick actually catch it right away or did you figure it out some other way first? I'm wondering if my scale is drifting too because my last few batches have tasted kinda flat. How often do you check yours now, just once before a brew or a couple times a day?
