The day I tried to roast my own beans in a popcorn popper
Last month I decided to save $15 a bag by roasting coffee at home. Found an old air popper at Goodwill for $3 and threw in some green beans from Guatemala I ordered online. The smoke set off my fire alarm at 6 AM and my neighbor banged on the door thinking my place was on fire. Ended up with beans that tasted like burnt toast and regret. Anyone else wreck their kitchen trying to DIY coffee?

Dude I did the exact same thing with the cold brew salvage move. Told myself the long steep would fix the burnt taste. Nope. Drank that tire-tasting sludge for a week out of pure stubbornness and principle. My wife took one sip and poured the rest down the sink while staring at me like I was an actual child. Now I just buy from a local roaster who does subscription bags and pretend the extra cost is a tip for not having to explain to the fire department why my apartment smells like a dumpster fire.

Five pounds of green beans later and I still can't walk into my kitchen without smelling that weird combo of burnt popcorn and shame. My wife walked in mid-roast and just pointed at the smoke detector, shaking her head like I was the dumbest person alive. The kicker is I tried to salvage the batch by grinding it anyway and making cold brew (you know, desperate times). Took one sip and it tasted like someone roasted a tire over a campfire. Now I just pay the $15 and pretend I'm supporting local business instead of admitting defeat.
