Yeah, the_harper is totally right about the green and brown mix. I learned the hard way that a giant pile of just grounds turns into a slimy brick. Now I toss them in with a ton of shredded junk mail and those dry leaves from the corner of the yard, and I turn the whole pile with a shovel every few weeks. It stops the weird science fair mold and actually makes dirt.

Reminds me of how most things need the right balance to work, not just compost.

Wait, is it just the coffee grounds by themselves? Because that might be the problem. Coffee grounds are what they call "green" stuff, like kitchen scraps, and they need to be mixed with a lot of "brown" stuff like dried leaves or cardboard. If you just pile up the grounds, they get really wet and dense and just grow mold. You gotta mix it all together and turn the pile sometimes so it breaks down right into dirt instead of turning into a weird science project.
