TIL a guy at a Rockford machine show talked me out of a crash with one sentence about my offsets
Two years back I was at a machine tool show in Rockford, Illinois, watching a Haas run a demo part, and some old timer next to me noticed I was squinting at the screen like I was doing long division. He asked what my work offset was set to, and when I said G54 he just laughed and said "that's your problem, you got 12 tools fighting over one set of numbers." Turns out he ran the same VF-2 for 19 years and kept a separate offset for every tool, which sounds obvious now but nobody ever showed me that when I was learning. He grabbed a napkin and drew out his whole setup in about 4 minutes, and I still have that napkin in my toolbox drawer today. Cut my setup time from about 45 minutes down to 15 on most jobs. Anybody else get taught offsets the lazy way and have to unlearn it?
