My neighbor in Tucson asked why I bother with a rain barrel when it rains 12 inches a year
She caught me hooking up a second barrel last weekend and just laughed, saying it was a waste of money in the desert. I told her those two barrels cover my whole veggie garden for about 6 weeks after each storm, which is way cheaper than my old $60 water bill in July. Now I keep doing the math on whether a third one pays off, or if I should just put that money into shade cloth instead. Has anyone here tracked how much a rain barrel actually saves them in a dry climate?
Did you see that guy on YouTube who tested his setup in Arizona and said each barrel saved him around 100 gallons per storm? Three barrels might be worth it if your water bill jumps that high in summer.
