Why does nobody mention the show field at Hershey is where I learned to check timing by ear
Two years back at the big Hershey swap meet in October, I was sitting behind my 51 Ford in the car corral when an older guy named Walt walked up and told me my idle sounded like it was retarding. I popped the hood and he had me loosen the distributor hold down bolt while the engine was running, then he just rotated it a hair at a time until the idle smoothed out, no timing light, just his ear. Half of me thinks that ear tuning is a lost art you cannot learn from a book, and the other half thinks a $30 light and a manual would have gotten me there in five minutes flat. What do you all trust more, your ears or the gun?
