My uncle told me to skip the valve lash check on my 302 and just "listen to it"
He's been tinkering with Fords since the 70s and swore the lifters on my '69 Mustang would tell me if anything was off, so I ran it that way for about 1,200 miles. Then a rocker started tapping at idle and I finally pulled the valve covers. Three of the rockers were loose and one pushrod was starting to wear a groove in the guide plate. I did the lash cold with a feeler gauge that weekend and the tap went away, so now I'm wondering how much else he told me to just "feel out" that I should be measuring instead. Any of you got a relative whose shade tree advice bit you later?
