I finally swapped my points ignition for electronic on my 66 Mustang, and here is what happened
Last month my 66 Mustang started misfiring bad above 3000 rpm, so I had to pick between rebuilding the points and condenser or dropping $120 on a Pertronix module. I went with the electronic swap because I was tired of setting dwell with a feeler gauge every 3,000 miles. Install took about an hour in my driveway in Fresno, and the difference was night and day, no more hesitation and the idle smoothed right out. I did keep the old points and a spare condenser in a zip bag in the glovebox, just in case the module dies on a longer drive. One thing I noticed is my tach reads about 200 rpm high now, which is weird but not a deal breaker. Has anyone else run into that tach drift after going electronic, or is it just my old gauge being flaky?
Keeping the old points in a zip bag is smart, but here is a thing most folks miss: the 200 rpm tach drift might not be the module at all. Your stock tach on a 66 runs off the coil signal, and a Pertronix changes how that signal fires, so adding a tach adapter or a small resistor in line often fixes the reading instead of replacing the gauge.
