Showerthought: I switched from a wire brush to a rotary whip last spring, and I have not touched the brush since
For the first six months of sweeping I used a standard wire brush on every flue, and it worked fine on soft soot. Last April I picked up a rotary whip for a job in Providence with glazed creosote from a wood stove, and it chewed through the buildup in about 20 minutes. The brush would have taken me an hour and a half, plus my shoulder was wrecked after. Now I run the whip on almost every job and only pull out the brush for really tight offsets where the whip will not fit. The trade off is the whip throws dust everywhere, so I had to tape up the shop vac hose better and wear a respirator the whole time. Anyone else made the switch and found a spot where the old brush still beats the whip?
