A shop towel over the vacuum hose changed how I clean tight flues
Last Tuesday I was sweeping a 1920s rental house in Rochester and the flue was so narrow my 6 inch brush kept kicking soot back into the room. I grabbed a plain shop towel, folded it over the hose end, and taped it down with two strips of painter's tape. The towel caught almost all the loose dust that usually puffs out, and I finished the whole run in about 20 minutes instead of the 45 it normally takes. I tried it again on a fireplace in Henrietta two days later and got the same result, barely any cleanup after. The tape does come loose if you drag the hose hard around a bend, so I keep a spare towel in my bucket now. Has anyone else rigged up a filter like this, or do you just run a HEPA vac and call it good?
