Unpopular opinion: prep lists are killing line cooks' instincts

Last month in Denver I watched a new guy freeze when the printer jammed because his whole flow depended on that paper. Three years ago I worked at a spot without prep lists and we just knew what needed doing when the rush hit. Has anyone else noticed cooks rely too much on the board instead of reading the pass themselves?
