Walked through a 1920s bungalow in Portland and the framing stopped me cold
I was in Portland helping my sister look at houses and we walked through this 1924 bungalow near Sellwood. The realtor was busy talking about the updated kitchen but I couldn't stop staring at the framing in the unfinished basement. Every stud was true and straight, and the old growth fir still had that tight grain you just don't see in new lumber. I ran my hand along one beam and counted maybe forty growth rings in three inches. The joists were notched in by hand, no hangers anywhere, and not one squeak in the whole floor upstairs. My sister thinks I'm nuts for caring more about the bones than the granite counters. I told her that house will outlive both of us if nobody messes with it. Any of you ever walk into an old place and get distracted by the framing before you even see the kitchen?
