Used to mark my cuts with a pencil, now I use a 3 dollar soapstone holder from the welding aisle
For 12 years I marked every board with a carpenter pencil and fought the lines all day. Pencil fades under a tarp, smears when your hands get sweaty in July, and disappears the second you hit it with a sander. Last spring I grabbed a soapstone holder on a whim at a welding supply place in Amarillo and the marks stay put through rain and dust. Now I keep one in my pouch and one clamped to the miter saw stand, and I have not sharpened a pencil on a job since. Anybody else make the switch, or am I late to this one?
