My old boss said crown molding was a waste of time and I believed him for 4 years
Back when I worked for a small outfit in Toledo, my boss Gary used to say crown molding was for guys who had nothing better to do. He said nobody looks up, miter cuts were a headache, and we should push clients toward simple square trim instead. I ran with that for 4 years and turned down every crown job that came my way. Then a homeowner on Bancroft Street asked me to match the crown in her 1920s house and I almost said no out of habit. I took it anyway. It took me two days, I ate three pieces of scrap on the inside corners, but I figured out the coping saw trick and it came out clean. She paid me $1,400 and gave me two referrals that same week. Now I look at every ceiling like it's missing something. Gary was dead wrong, he just hated doing the work. Anybody else had a mentor feed them a bad rule they stuck with way too long?
