Just realized I'd been sharpening my chisels backwards for 7 years until a guy at a jobsite in Austin pointed it out

He saw me grinding the bevel side down on a wet stone and just laughed, then showed me the proper angle with an old Stanley that cut through red oak like butter, has anyone else had a basic technique totally flipped on them by a stranger?

Honestly that’s wild but I get it. Used to think you could sharpen any way as long as it felt right but nope. Seeing someone cut through oak like butter definitely changed my mind on proper angles.

Yeah but see, "cut through oak like butter" can also just mean they got their technique down and the steel is good. I've had cheap knives at wonky angles that still slice fine if I'm paying attention to my motion. Angle matters but it's not the only thing, you know?
