The camp host at Big Bend told me to ditch my $200 stove and now I can't stop thinking about it
Spent 4 nights at the Chisos Basin campground in Big Bend earlier this month and the host there, a guy named Ray who's been doing it for 11 seasons, saw me fighting my fancy canister stove in the wind and just laughed. He pulled out this beat up little alcohol stove he made from a cat food can and had water boiling in about 6 minutes flat while I was still cupping my hands around my jet. I've been reading reviews for weeks trying to find the perfect windproof setup and this dude solved it with a tuna can and some Heet. Has anyone else had a host or ranger completely change their mind about what gear actually matters out there?
