I spent $85 on a "vintage" t-shirt press to fix a camera and it was a total bust
Last weekend I drove out to a flea market in Allentown and saw a guy selling an old t-shirt press for $85. I thought I could use it to flatten out a bent top plate on a Nikon FM2, since I'd read somewhere that heat and pressure can straighten out small dings. Big mistake. The press had no temp control and the gauge was broken, so I melted part of the leatherette and warped the plate even worse. I ended up losing $85 on the press and another $40 on the camera body. I should have just used my arbor press and a couple of wood blocks like normal. Has anyone else tried to get creative with tools from a flea market and had it backfire? What's your worst cheap tool fail in the shop?
There's a pattern where saving money on the tool ends up costing way more than just buying the right one or using what you already have. You had an arbor press sitting there the whole time, and the shortcut still felt tempting because $85 seemed like a deal. Cheap tools from flea markets are only a bargain when you already know exactly what you need them for.
