A stranger at a campsite told me my tent stakes were junk, now I pack 12 inch ones

Last summer near Moab, some older guy walked over while I was fighting a bent stake into hardpack and just said 'those are for picnics, not wind.' I swapped to 12 inch steel ones from a farm supply place for like $18 total and my tent didn't budge during a 40 mph gust that night. Has anyone else had a random stranger's comment completely change their gear setup?

Stranger camp wisdom is a whole genre, lol. Some guy once told me my camp chair was trash because the legs kept sinking into sand, now I carry these little plastic feet things everywhere I go.
