Hostel dorm or private room when traveling solo - which saves more in the long run?

I met a guy in Barcelona last month who swore by private rooms because he always got sick in dorms and lost days of vacation time. But then his friend said hostels are half the price and you meet people who share food and transport tips. What's your call on the real budget math here?

Honestly, the dorm math only works if you actually sleep well and don't get sick. I've had trips where one bad night in a loud room meant I wasted a whole day too tired to do anything. So if your sleep is light or your immune system is weak, the private room saves you money by saving your vacation time.

My last hostel trip in Bangkok proved your point. I got a cold from the shared bathroom and lost two days in bed. Never again, I'll pay for the private room just for peace of mind.
