DAE weigh the cost of a $45 space heater against a $12 electric blanket?
My apartment in Cleveland got down to 58 degrees some nights back in January, so I grabbed a $12 electric blanket instead of a $45 space heater, and my power bill actually dropped about $18 that month. The blanket only pulls around 100 watts compared to 1500 for the heater, which I did not expect to matter that much. Curious if anyone else has crunched those numbers or found something even cheaper that works.
That $18 drop lines up with my own math, though I got there the lazy way after a January in Toledo where my kitchen hit 54. I bought a 1500 watt heater first and watched it eat about 12 cents an hour at our rates, so running it eight hours a night was close to $30 a month on its own. My blanket pulls 90 watts, which works out to pennies a night, and the cat fights me for it every single evening. The catch is the blanket only heats you, not the room, so my pipes and my houseplants still froze while I was cozy under it. The dumb part is I spent two winters convinced I was saving money by just being cold, which is not a plan, that is just being cheap and sad.
