Just realized my mortar was too wet for 2 whole years and a mason in Baltimore tipped me off
I was on a job in Baltimore back in March doing a garden wall and the guy I was working with grabbed a trowel full of my mortar and just watched it slide off. He said nothing for a minute, then said "that's soup, not mortar." I had been mixing at the same sloppy consistency since I started because it spread so easy and I figured that meant it was right. Turns out I was trading short term ease for weak joints the whole time, and I can think of at least four walls from 2023 that I'd bet money on failing early. Now I mix stiffer than feels natural and the brick sets way faster without me fighting it. How do you all judge the right wetness, by eye or do some of you actually use a slump test on site?
