A trowel handle quit on me after 214 courses and I hadn't checked the ferrule once
I keep a tally on the inside of my toolbox lid of how many courses I lay each week. Friday I added it up and the same trowel had gone through 214 courses since I bought it in March. Halfway through a garden wall job in Reno the handle spun loose mid-butter and I nearly dumped a whole board of brick. Pulled the ferrule and the wood underneath was cracked and soft from mortar water getting in there. Turns out I never once checked that joint, just grabbed it and went. A fresh handle is about 18 bucks but a whole board of brick on the ground costs a lot more than that. Now I give the handle a twist every few days and keep a spare stick in the truck. Curious if anyone else counts courses or is that just a me thing.
