I ditched peat moss for my indoor ferns 8 months ago and my Denver apartment setup has never looked better
I kept buying big bags of peat based mix from the garden center on Colorado Blvd because that is what my mom always did, but after reading about how fast bogs get stripped I switched to a coco coir and perlite blend in January and my maidenhair stopped dropping leaves within 3 weeks. The coir holds water differently so I had to water less often, which honestly was the hardest part to get used to. Has anyone else made the swap and found a mix ratio that works better for ferns than straight coir?
Wait, your maidenhair stopped dropping leaves in just 3 weeks? That seems crazy fast for a plant to adjust to a whole new medium, in my experience ferns throw a fit for at least a month when you mess with their roots. Maybe the Denver air is just dry enough that the coir's extra moisture retention made that big of a difference right away. Your mileage may vary, but I'd be curious what your ratio is because straight coir stayed way too wet for my setup.
