Vent: my $30 heat gun beats the cheap tacking iron I fought with for 6 months
I kept burning my fingers on that little tacking iron trying to set down endpapers, and the glue kept cooling before I could smooth the paper flat. My wife got me a basic heat gun from the hardware store in Canton for $30, and I hold it a few inches back while I work the paper down with a bone folder. Night and day, no scorch marks on the paste downs and the corners sit tight on the first try. Anyone else skip the iron and just use warm air, or am I late to something obvious here?

Man, I wish I'd figured this out sooner too. I fought with one of those little Clover irons for way too long, same deal with the glue going cold on me halfway through. The trick that saved me was heating the paste down area first with the gun, then working fast with the bone folder from the center out to the corners so you push the air pockets ahead of you. Just keep that nozzle moving so you don't bubble the veneer or scorch the finish.
