Someone told me I was using too much glue on my spines and they were right

Had a guy at the local bookbinding meetup last month watch me work on a rebind and just straight up said "you're drowning it in PVA." I was kinda annoyed at first, thought I knew what I was doing. But I tried backing off on the glue amount on the next project, just a thin even layer instead of slathering it on. Night and day difference. The spine flexes way better now and I dont get those weird bumps near the hinge. Anyone else get feedback that stung at first but turned out to be golden advice?

Is it really that big of a deal though? Like I get being sloppy with glue makes things look bad but some people act like you ruined the whole book. Maybe it's just a personal preference thing, my first few spines were a bit goopy and they held up fine for years. I mean if the spine works and the book is still together who cares if there's a little extra glue in there? I'm not saying don't take advice but sometimes people get way too technical about stuff that doesn't matter in the long run.

That's a hard pill to swallow when someone calls you out mid-project, but man, sometimes you need that reality check. Reminds me of when my art teacher told me I used too much water in my watercolors, felt like an idiot but she was spot on.
