TIL a journeyman in Gary told me most tube failures start at the weld, not the firebox
I was doing a shutdown in Gary last month and this old journeyman pointed at a cracked tube and said 8 out of 10 failures he sees start right at the weld seam. I always figured it was heat or scale eating from the inside out, but he pulled up a chart showing the stress points and it made sense. Nobody ever walked me through that in my apprenticeship, we just got told to swap tubes and move on. Now I'm second guessing every job where I rushed the prep on a seam because it looked fine. Has anyone else had a weld let go way earlier than it should have?
