Old timer told me to keep my stinger lead shorter and I thought he was crazy

Guy with 30 years in the union told me to shorten up my stinger to maybe 6 feet max and run a longer whip instead. Tried it last week on a tank repair and the arc control was way better, less spatter too. Anyone else got weird tips from the old heads that actually worked?

Yeah you gotta trust the old guys (even when they sound crazy). I had a similar thing happen with a boilermaker who told me to run my rods on the hot side and just move faster. Tried it on some rusty plate and it actually burned in way cleaner than I expected. The short stinger thing makes sense though, less resistance means more power at the arc and you get way better control. I've noticed my welds look a lot smoother since I switched to that setup too. It's funny how the little tweaks make the biggest difference sometimes.

What's the longest whip you've run with that short stinger setup?
