Fitter marks with soapstone drive me nuts on site
Watched three fitters at the Mobil refinery in Beaumont lay out the same header twice because nobody squared up off the centerline first. They just eyeballed from the flange and then blamed the 2-inch gap on the pipe. I spend five extra minutes with a chalk line and a 4-foot level, and my weld joints line up first try every time. Why skip the layout step when it costs you an hour of grinding later, or am I the only one who treats the tape like it's sacred?

Saw a guy do the same thing on a compressor skid years back, eyeballed everything off one corner and the whole base plate came out racked like a trapezoid. Foreman made him cut the anchor bolts loose and redo it, took two days. Five minutes with a string line would've saved him all that, but some guys just gotta learn the hard way I guess.
