My $45 dice tower now sits in the closet, here is what sold me on sleeves instead

I spent $45 on a fancy wooden dice tower last month but after watching a friend's 20 year old copy of Dominion survive beer spills because every card was sleeved, I finally get why people dump cash into 1000 packs of cheap plastic sleeves instead, so what is the worst thing you ever saw ruin a game?

Saw a post somewhere about a guy whose copy of Twilight Imperium got soaked when his basement flooded, and the box basically turned into a giant paper brick. Sleeves wouldn't have saved that either, but at least the cards might've had a chance. That's the kind of horror story that makes me throw sleeves on everything now.
