Update: my railroad spike knife failed the bend test, but the one I drew out with a hammer survived
I made two spike knives last month out of the same batch of spikes and finally got around to testing them. The first one I mostly shaped with my belt grinder, and at the 90 degree bend it snapped right at the transition. The second one I drew the blade out by hand with my 3 lb cross peen, and it bent past 90 without a crack. Heat treat was the same on both, 1500F quench in parks 50 then two temper cycles at 400. So is it the grain from the grinder heat or did the hammer work really do that much, because I am honestly second guessing my whole process now.
