Unpopular opinion: a 3000 year old nail from a dig site in Turkey made me rethink my whole heat treat
Helped a friend's kid sort artifacts from a dig near Ankara and the iron nails in that box were still holding shape after 3000 years. I've been chasing hardness numbers on my knives for 2 years and these old smiths were just working softer steel that lasted. Anybody else go softer on purpose for tools that need to hang around?
