Rant: My cheap anvil from a farm auction turned out to be a real problem

I grabbed a 110 pound anvil at a farm auction outside Topeka for $80 last spring. The face looked decent but the rebound felt dead, I figured I could work around it. After 3 weeks of hammering, my wrists started aching every night and my welds were coming out sloppy. Turns out the thing had a hidden crack running through the heel, and the whole top was just a thin plate over soft iron. Anyone else get burned by a bargain anvil that seemed fine at first glance? What do you check before you buy used now?
