My coal forge blower seized up mid-project on a 12 inch bowie and I need ideas
So last Saturday I was about 4 hours into forging a 12 inch bowie out of 1084 and everything was going fine. I stepped away for maybe 5 minutes to grab some water and when I came back my hand crank blower was locked up solid. Could not get it to turn at all. I pulled the whole thing apart on my bench and the main shaft bushing is chewed up bad, looks like it ran dry on oil way longer than I realized. The fan housing has some rust pitting too and a couple of the gear teeth are worn down to nubs. I finished the blade with my little hair dryer rig taped to the pipe but that was a rough way to end the night. I am weighing fixing this old blower versus just getting a small electric one. Has anyone rebuilt one of these old blowers and is it worth the effort or should I just move on?
