A guy at the Sycamore forge demo in Peoria showed me the coal split trick, and my fire pot stays hot way longer now
I drove out to a small forge demo in Peoria three weeks ago just to watch, and this old smith named Walt pulled me aside after his coal fire kept going out on him. He showed me how he wets his coal fines and packs them around the outside of the fire in a ring, then lets it coke up slow instead of dumping water on the whole thing. I tried it on my own forge last Saturday and my fire held steady for almost two hours without me fighting it, which never happens. Now my coal lasts longer too, maybe a third less per session, which adds up when a bag runs me $22. Has anyone else tried packing fines like that, or do you keep it simple and just bank the fire?
