My cousin swore by a karaoke machine mic for recording vocals, he was actually onto something
Last month I tried recording a cover with a $15 USB karaoke mic from a garage sale in Portland, and the lo-fi crackle made the chorus sound like a haunted house beat. Has anyone else gotten a weird usable sound from gear that should be a joke, or did I just catch a lucky glitch?
That haunted house beat description is killing me because I know exactly what you mean. I grabbed a $20 cassette deck mic at a flea market a couple years back just to mess around, and the hiss and wobble ended up being the whole vibe of the track I used it on. Sometimes that cheap gear does something the fancy stuff can't, it just adds a weird texture you can't fake with plugins. Sorry your chorus sounds like a ghost convention but honestly that might be a feature and not a bug. Hold onto that mic, you clearly found something good.
