Tried reading a 900 chapter web novel with a spoiler spreadsheet and it backfired hard
So about 3 months ago I decided to tackle one of those massive cultivation web novels everyone talks about on here, the kind with 900 plus chapters that people say takes forever to get good. I made this whole spreadsheet to track characters and factions because I kept getting lost, and I figured if I logged every name I'd stay hooked. What actually happened is I got so into updating the sheet that I stopped caring about the actual story. Around chapter 150 I realized I was reading a chapter in 4 minutes and spending 15 minutes on my notes. The slow burn I was supposed to enjoy turned into data entry. I dropped the spreadsheet and restarted from chapter 1, and the book hit way different without me playing archivist. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has ruined a long read by trying too hard to keep track of it, and how you balance notes vs just letting the story wash over you.
