Am I the only one who fast forwards every found footage tape to the last 60 seconds first?
I picked up a box of 14 VHS tapes at a garage sale in Boise last Saturday and started doing this thing where I check the final minute before I watch anything else. Sounds dumb but the payoff is almost always at the end, like a birthday party tape where the last 60 seconds is a kid standing completely still in a dark hallway for no reason. Now I skip the whole middle of every tape and just rip the last minute to my laptop. Does anyone else do this, or am I wrecking the whole point of watching these things?
I did the same thing with a stack of 22 tapes from an estate sale in Nampa last year and it saved me hours. The trick I found was to rip the last 90 seconds instead of 60, because a lot of the weird stuff starts right when people think they stopped recording. One tape ended with a guy walking backward into his own garage for a solid 40 seconds, and if I'd only grabbed the last minute I would've missed him waving at the camera first. After I sorted the good endings into a folder, I went back and watched the full tapes that actually had something going on. Skipping the middle isn't wrecking it, you're just doing triage. Most of the middle is birthday cake and people adjusting the tripod.
